Thailand Flooding to Cause Hard Disk Shortages

by Micro Medic 29. November 2011 11:38

In many cases events across the globe may shock or sadden us all, but rarely do they have any measurable effect on us. Instead we perhaps pause to reflect on how lucky we are or how unfortunate others are in their misery.

The recent news about flooding of epic proportions in Thailand is a case in point. It was in the news and therefore I was aware of it, but I did not think much of it. In any case I did not think I would feel any effects.

However that has changed. I was unaware that Thailand plays a huge part in the production of hard disk drives for the computer industry. Not only do the drives get assembled there but the logic chips that make them work are also manufactured there.  Now most if not all of those factories that build them are under water to this day, weeks after the flooding first occurred, with estimates now saying it may be nine months or more before the pipeline of hard drives starts to fill up again.

Hard drives have been dirt cheap up until recently, but now they are already hard to find and I feel certain they will get much worse before they get better. There are alternatives - new solid state drives can take their place - but the cost per drive is going to be MUCH higher.  We will also feel that when new PCs and servers are purchased unless the manufacturers there were hedging hard drives like crazy, but I doubt it.

HP Decides to Stay in the PC Business

by Micro Medic 28. October 2011 14:40

HP announced today that they have decided the Personal Systems Group (PSG) that makes their line of home and business PC's will remain an integral part of HP.

You may recall that word had leaked that HP was exploring the possibility of spinning off their PC business after which HP came out and admitted that it was true.

For those of us here at Micro Medic we can breathe a sigh of relief because we have been aligned with HP for their servers and PCs for a long, long time.  Not that we were afraid of the product line actually going away - we were very certain that if the line was spun off it would continue to be well supported - much like happened with IBM's PC business which is now thriving under Lenovo. The bigger concern was the potential need for reassurance to our customers that the PCs they run their business with would continue to be supported into the future.

Now that is behind us and we can forge ahead. Thanks HP!

Micro Medic is now an EMC reseller

by Micro Medic 7. October 2011 14:30

Micro Medic has become an EMC reseller, enabling them to recommend and sell EMC's MozyPro online backup services for servers, desktop computers and notebooks. In addition Micro Medic will also have access to EMC's VNX and VNXe line of small business storage solutions as well as the Data Domain line of deduplication hardware.

The increasing popularity of online backup services is being driven affordability and the need to satisfy the demands of regulatory agencies who are in some cases requiring a high degree of redundancy in disaster recovery plans.
